Understanding current changes to the global health sector

In recent months, we have seen significant and far-reaching changes across the global health sector.

Money iconSince the start of 2025, we’ve seen the United States and Argentina formally announce their intent to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO). We have also seen the halting of US funding for global health-impacting activities run by USAID, US Centers for Disease Control and other agencies. This has been followed by the proposed reduction in aid spending from a number of other countries in order to increase spending on defence. The potential impact of this on global health cannot be understated.

We are keen to better understand how these changes might impact work to defeat meningitis. We are gathering information from people working on meningitis across the world. This will help us to develop a bank of evidence on how changes to global health funding are affecting meningitis programmes and advocacy.

In the face of change, we must continue to work together to meet our shared goal to defeat meningitis by 2030.
