Meningitis Research Foundation today announced the relaunch of its vital Ambassador programme. This initiative harnesses the powerful voices of individuals with lived experience to significantly raise awareness of meningitis and provide crucial support in communities across the UK. The programme has been made possible by the generous support of the National Lottery Community Fund and The Hodge Foundation.
Far too many families have endured the unimaginable pain of meningitis, and the charity is determined to prevent others from suffering the same heartbreak. By bravely sharing their personal stories to raise awareness, Ambassadors are pivotal in educating communities about the disease and ultimately saving lives.
The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the Ambassador programme, leading to a pause in events and in-person activities. However, with renewed funding, the initiative is now back and actively engaging at-risk groups through diverse events, from freshers' fairs and school talks to community festivals and health days. A key focus is reaching individuals and families in under-served communities who often experience significant health inequalities, building support and understanding around meningitis.

This vital funding has also enabled the charity to develop a first-class training and support system for its volunteer Ambassadors. A new, dedicated volunteer hub provides essential training in key areas of their role, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to make a real impact. This includes crucial modules on safeguarding and effective media communication, ensuring Ambassadors are fully prepared to share their stories responsibly and powerfully.

“Our vision has been to develop an Ambassador programme with those who have direct experience of meningitis, who can share its devastating and debilitating impact, while highlighting the deep resilience shown by so many survivors, families and caregivers.” said Caroline Hughes, Support Services Manager. “Using a data-led approach to target our activity where it is most needed, we want to take this message to communities across the UK, so they know why and how to protect themselves and those they love against meningitis. This work will help the UK remain a ground breaker in meningitis prevention, support and care — so that more lives can be saved.”
