Rarer types of meningitis

There are other bacteria that cause at most a handful of cases of meningitis in the UK each year.

The following is a list of bacteria isolated from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples in 2001/2002, the latest year for which the Health Protection Agency has provided data on CSF isolates:

  • Bacillus sp
  • Bacteroides sp
  • Campylobacter sp
  • Citrobacter sp
  • Clostridium sp
  • Corynebacterium sp
  • Enterobacter sp
  • Enterococcus sp
  • Fusobacterium sp
  • Gemella sp
  • Klebsiella sp
  • Micrococcus sp
  • Moraxella sp
  • Morganella morganii
  • Propionibacterium sp
  • Proteus sp
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • Pseudomonas sp
  • Serratia sp
  • Stenotrophomonas maltophilia
  • Streptococci Groups A, C and G
