Joyce Hatfield's story

Joyce talks about the sudden onset of meningitis symptoms and the after-effects her illness has had.

All I remember is playing ball on the floor with my 3 year old nephew.

The next thing I knew it was 18 days later and I had meningitis. I had a bad ear and could not hear what people were saying. I had had a stroke while I was in a coma. I guess I fought everyone as they had my arms and legs tied down.

It has been 6 years now and I am on so much medication.

Now I have mini strokes that I can’t remember having. I have a hard time remembering.

Now my face arms and leg still mess up and lord help me if I look at flashing lights.

I was put in a treatment centre to learn how to walk, talk, feed myself, go to the bathroom and learn how to shower.

It has been 6 years now and I am on so much medication.
