Superhero Tri 2022: putting people with disabilities first

August 2022

The Superhero Tri is the UK’s only disability sports event; a fun, pressure-free day of sports which puts people with disabilities first. The Tri involves the classic stages of swimming, cycling and running, but with no cut-off times or restrictions on equipment it is really accessible for all.

The event was held on 20th August at Dorney Lake Windsor, a beautiful setting that hosted some of the 2012 Olympic water sports.

“I really enjoyed attending this in person, after last year’s ‘at home’ version. It’s such an inclusive and positive family event and was an absolute joy to be a part of. Seeing MRF supporters, those directly impacted by meningitis and septicaemia, able to participate in every moment was the highlight.” Leanna, Supporter Care Officer

Showing off meningitis survivors unique superpowers

MRF have taken part in this event since it’s early days in 2017, where it has gone from strength to strength. The event is a great opportunity for children with any disability caused by meningitis and septicaemia to have a go at sport in an inclusive and encouraging environment. We love that everyone can get involved and show off their unique superpowers.

The event was sponsored by both Marvel and Disney, so there were many Super-sightings of Spiderman, Wonder Woman, Iron Man and Captain America.

There were also lots of celebrities taking part, such as comedian Alex Brooker, Great British Bake Off star Briony Williams and Invictus Games medallist David Wiseman. MRF’s very own Ambassador, Sofia Crockatt took part, alongside David, in the Celebrity Tri and showed us all how it was done.

As well as the main event, there were lots of opportunities to show off participant’s super-skills, such as taking part in wheelchair basketball and knocking down pins in a game of skittles whilst wearing limited-vision glasses.

MRF were so excited to be a part of this special day again and we loved meeting and interacting with the special families that support us. One of these families, Team Vincent, donned their Spiderman shirts, and smashed through the Triathlon to finish with great big smiles on their faces.

The Superhero Tri highlights programme, presented by Clare Balding, is now available to view on All4.
