Father and daughter stride out to help beat meningitis

Father and daughter stride out to help beat meningitis

16 May 2014

Nick Crockatt (42) and his nine year old daughter Sofia will be taking part in a number of events in 2014 to mark our 25 years of life saving research.

We have spent over £17 million on research since our launch in 1989, which has resulted in saving thousands of children and adults from death and severe disability from meningitis and septicaemia.

The father and daughter team from Leyland, Lancashire, who are regional ambassadors for us, have personal experience of the disease. Sofia contracted meningococcal septicaemia in February 2007 when she was 2 ½years old.

Nick said: “Meningitis Research Foundation is a charity very, very close to the Crockatt family's hearts as without their hard work over many years, Sofia might not have survived after she contracted meningococcal septicaemia. Sofia spent two weeks in ITU where her life hung in the balance and when she recovered the damage to her lower limbs was so bad that the doctors had to amputate her left leg below the knee, and fight to save her right leg. In2013, aged 8, Sofia became the first ever junior ambassador of MRF.”

“In March this year we received the amazing news that a Men B vaccine (which could have prevented Sofia losing her leg ) will soon be available on the NHS but it is essential that we continue to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of this deadly disease and continue to raise money for Meningitis Research Foundation to support those affected by it.”

Nick and Sofia will be taking part in the following events in 2014:

Sofia will be taking part in the Mini Great Manchester Run on 17 May 2014 and the Mini Great North Run (Gateshead) on6 September 2014. Nick will be running the Great Manchester 10km on Sunday 18May, taking part in a 100km 25th Anniversary Walk from Sheffield to Manchester across the across the Peak District from 23 May and then running in the Gateshead Great North Run on 7 September.

Nick and Sofia arehoping to raise £10,000 in 2014, if you would like to sponsor them please goto: www.justgiving.com/Nick-Crockatt1 or text CROC99 £5 to 70070

Chris Head Chief Executive said: “ The Crockatt family are huge supporters of Meningitis Research Foundation and amazing Ambassadors for the region and have raised over £25,000 for us since they joined the charity. Since we launched MRF the number of deaths from meningitis in the UK has halved and none of it would have been possible without supporters like Nick, Sofia, their family and friends and their amazing fundraising efforts allowing us to continue our vital research projects. It’s thanks to them we have been able to change the landscape of meningitis in the UK and Ireland. And it’s their ongoing support which will ensure we can share the expertise we’ve built up over 25 years with millions more around the world.”
