Christmas Craft Fair in Thornbury

Christmas Craft Fair in Thornbury

13 November 2012

Thornbury woman Christine Carter is looking for volunteers to help with her Christmas Craft Fair at the Swan Inn, Thornbury on Saturday 17 November.

Money raised from the event will be donated to national charity Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) who are based in Thornbury and have supported Chris since she contracted Group A streptococcal septicaemia at Christmas in 2010, resulting in amputations of her legs below the knees and many fingers.

Chris and her daughter Lindsey Benson have already arranged two craft fairs this year which have raised over £2,000 for MRF. Chris said: “After I had septicaemia in 2010 and lost my legs and most of my hands, Lindsey and I decided we wanted to raise money into much needed research so we set about organising some craft fairs. We wanted them to create a showcase for local crafters (with the stipulation that they must live within 10 miles of Thornbury or crafters who had a connection to meningitis or septicaemia). They also give us an opportunity to make people more aware of Meningitis and Septicaemia and how quickly they strike and can be mistaken for milder illnesses like flu in the winter.”

Chris Head, Chief Executive of MRF said: “ Chris sadly has firsthand experience of how quickly meningitis and septicaemia can strike and how difficult they are to diagnose and treat. The craft fairs that she and Lindsey have organised and the money they have raised to date have made a huge difference to the work we do as we rely heavily on voluntary donations from our members, the general public and businesses throughout the UK.”

The Thornbury Christmas craft fair will include 35 local crafters selling a wide variety of handmade items. Thornbury Town Band will be playing and mulled wine and minced pies will be available.

If anyone can spare an hour or two to help set up the stalls or has any fabric, yarn or handmade items they would like to donate for Christine to sell on her own table please contact Genna Godfrey at MRF on 01454 280414 or email gennag@meningitis.org.
