Members’ Day at Grimsthorpe Castle, May 2018

June 2018

On Sunday 20th May, Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) were delighted to host a Member’s Day at Grimsthorpe Castle, Park and Gardens, in Lincolnshire.

There was a great turnout and 14 families (40 + people) came together to share their experiences of meningitis and septicaemia with each other, and meet the MRF team.

We set up our marquee in the grounds of Grimsthorpe Castle and used this as a base throughout the day. Families could come and go as they please, and take part in the various activities this beautiful venue had to offer. Families were able to visit the castle, hire bikes, walk around the gardens, sit by the stunning lake and visit the tea rooms. We also had a face painter with us throughout the day and a treasure hunt for the children.  Being located at the heart of all this activity also allowed us to raise vital awareness of meningitis and septicaemia amongst the general public.

We re-grouped at lunchtime for a picnic and our members really appreciated the opportunity to meet each other and share their personal experiences of meningitis and septicaemia. Families could also meet the MRF team and talk to us about the different areas of our work, including research, international programmes, fundraising and support.

The feedback from the day has been incredibly positive and families have come away feeling more informed, more supported and less alone. The day has been described as brilliant, wonderful, family oriented and beautiful.

We are looking forward to planning more of these days in the future.

Katherine Carter
Information and Support Officer

Hi, I’m Katherine and I joined Meningitis Research Foundation in August 2015. I raise awareness of meningitis and septicaemia by sharing medical information about the disease with the general public and health professionals.

I am involved in organising MRF events for families and health professionals, and meet our members and supporters in the community offering our support, whatever their experience of meningitis and septicaemia.
I also take helpline calls and answer emails from people with a range of queries about meningitis and septicaemia, including symptoms and after effects, and offer them support if they or their loved ones are affected. I am humbled by the inspirational people we meet.
