My best friend got admitted into intensive care three weeks ago with a case of bacterial cryptococcal meningitis, it was such a serious case they could no longer do any more lumbar punctures and had to do a brain surgery to extract the liquid directly from the head. He has lost his eye sight and can still hardly move any of the body except one arm. His body reacts to impulses and the pupils react to light but nothing seems to be improving, the doctors say it appears there is no brain damage so they cant give any previsions from the scans......

Three years ago, when my daughter was 4, she was admitted to hospital with Viral Meningitis. It was the worst time of my life. Every since then, I've experienced such a range of reactions from people when they find out she had it. Most are incredibly sympathetic, although many seem to want to tell me that viral meningitis is just a mild illness, something like a bad cold...and it upsets me. So I wrote this as a vent really, as just a way to say it how it is. Every case is different. But every case is serious. Tell me it's not serious for a 4...

My son skipped a year of school and so will start university slightly younger than normal. He was born on 7th September 1997 but our GP practice has told us that the cut off date is 31st August and therefore the NHS has instructed them not to include him in the immuisation programme. This seems wrong as it will put him at risk. Has anybody had a similar experience and found a solution?
