My husbands father has just left the hospital after being there for one month overcoming the infection from viral meningitis. He is now in an assisted living home. He is only 58! We don't know what to do. There is no help from doctors, all they can tell us is that yes he has brain damage and yes he is not himself. Also they dont think he should be on his own, but there is no real guidance. How do you cope with this disease afterwards. He is so unhappy and does not belong in a home. I was diagnosed with viral meningitis in 2003. Apparently it was a rather bad case as, as the headache worsened and the vomiting continued, my brain started shutting down my major programming. The confusion was so great I didn't realize I could no longer hear. I was told later that whatever words I was trying to say were not recognizable. I lost sight just before I lost consciousness.
