It was great to see so many of our members and their families enjoying a day out amongst the animals on Saturday at the first MRF Members’ Day of 2012. We also welcomed staff from our Charity of the Year partners Deutsche Bank who enjoyed the venue with their families, as well as taking the chance to meet MRF staff and members with personal experience of meningitis and septicaemia.
Everyone enjoyed getting up close and personal with the animals as we saw rhinoceros, tigers, lions, black bears, wolves and, of course, the monkeys playing their tricks with car windscreen wipers! We were especially pleased that the elephants were allowed to show their support by visiting MRF stand in the early afternoon.
The MRF stand was positioned perfectly next to the Swan Boats, where children enjoyed an outing on Swan Lake (as parents pedalled!) before moving onto train rides, tree-top adventures and soft play areas for the little ones. We took the opportunity to raise awareness of symptoms among park visitors and were grateful for the generous donations from many of those who passed by.
The main purpose of the day was to offer an opportunity for members to meet others affected by meningitis and septicaemia and we know that this definitely meant a lot to those attending. For many it was the first time they had met anyone else with similar – and often very different – outcomes. MRF staff talked about the work and future plans of the charity and were really pleased to find our members so enthusiastic in their support for further research and awareness.
We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who attended and to Woburn Safari Park staff who were courteous and helpful throughout our visit – and, I must say, the food in the cafe was great too!
For anyone who missed out this time (plus, of course, all those who’d like to come again!) the next Members’ Day for England & Wales will be at Leeds Castle in Kent 22 September – details coming your way soon...
