6year old brother still not alert

Hi April last year my 6year old brother caught very bad meningits and was in hospital for a month and he is now home but i dont understand what is wrong with him as he has not woken up yet as if he is in some sort of coma all he does is eat sleep and laugh and opens his eyes and there is no sort of communication he is unable to walk or speak he just lies in bed but if he hears noise he will tilt his head , as he lives abroad i dont no the full details doctors say he will recover but it will take time i want to no has this meningits left some after affect is this some sort of coma which i dont understand please help im so confused and its breaking my heart to no he is like this as he use to be a active and lively little boy x
