Jamie Thorburn's story

I wanted to share my story on my experience of when my son was hit by meningitis at just 10 Months old.

I was a young mother aged just 21 and was with my first and only child. As all mothers with their first child you go through the usual emotions and worries that all parents do.

I knew something was wrong

I found my son over the course of 24 hours change in his enthusiasm and alertness and knew something was wrong. I went to the doctor’s and explained and was told I was being an overprotective mother and may have Post Natal Depression.

As a young and maybe naive person at the time I went home feeling like a mad woman.

The next day when I was at work I received a call from my mother that my son had collapsed and been rushed to hospital. He had viral meningitis and thanks to my mother’s assertiveness to go straight to the hospital it was picked up early. After 6 weeks of my son being in hospital he recovered and is now an 18 year old healthy young man.

I think it’s very important to trust your instincts as a parent and if you believe something’s wrong trust yourself.
