- Meet the scientists working to improve our understanding of meningitis in Scotland
During this research Discovery Day, you will hear about the valuable work we’re funding to help improve the recognition and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia using MRF’s Meningococcus Genome Library.
This library holds the complete genetic blueprint (genome) of bacteria that caused cases of meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia in the UK. This is important because it allows researchers from across the world to compare and investigate what strains are causing disease.
The researchers, led by Dr Claire Cameron, have already added over 300 Scottish samples to the library, meaning the library now represents the bacteria known to have caused disease in Scotland from 2009-2016, an important period for meningitis which covers the increase seen in MenW infection, leading to the introduction of the MenACWY vaccine for teenagers, and the introduction of the MenB vaccine for babies.
The team are now focussing to understand how the genetic make-up of the bacteria might interact with factors such as age, vaccine history and medical care received to determine the severity of their disease.
In addition to hearing how this exciting research is progressing, you will have the chance to take part in a ‘Genome Detectives workshop’ which will see you mounting your own computer based genetic investigation into these potentially lethal bacteria.
You’ll also get the chance to meet other members and supporters, MRF staff, and join with students from local colleges who are also invited to the event.
