Biggest ever London Loot for meningitis

28 March 2008

On 19 and 20 March student fundraisers from universities around the country donned fancy dress and took to the streets of London to raise a record £46,350.16 for Meningitis Research Foundation.

For two days student collectors braved weather best described as 'miserable', shaking their collection buckets on the Capital's streets, tube and DLR stations and asking passers by to donate spare change.

Said Kathryn Lacy, spokesperson for Meningitis Research Foundation: "I'd like to thank the student fundraisers who made the journey to London, and all the commuters who donated their spare change. To raise the biggest amount in the 10 year history of London Loot is a fantastic achievement."

Meningitis and septicaemia affect around 3,000 people each year in the UK killing 10% of sufferers and leaving many more with disabilities such as brain damage, deafness and amputations. The money raised will help the charity's vital work of funding research, raising awareness and supporting people affected by these devastating diseases.
