In my mid-twenties I contracted life-threatening meningitis. It was a terrifying experience but fortunately I made a full recovery. Now, as a mother of two young children I know just how frightening it is to have a sick child with a high fever and worry it might be meningitis.
With the highest number of cases of meningitis and septicaemia - the blood poisoning form of the disease - occurring in December, January and February, recognising the symptoms at this time of the year could save lives.
Meningitis and septicaemia can develop very quickly and can kill in hours. Therefore, it is vital to be aware of the symptoms and to get medical help immediately if a case is suspected.
