Winter meningitis awareness
04 December 2006
The highest number of cases of meningitis and septicaemia are often recorded in December and January. To help save lives this winter, national charity Meningitis Research Foundation is raising awareness of the symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia - the blood poisoning form of the disease - through its 24 hour helpline - 080 8800 3344.
Denise Vaughan, Chief Executive of Meningitis Research Foundation, said: "In winter months when cases are at their height, symptoms information is vital. We would urge readers to phone the Foundation's Freefone 24 hour helpline and ask for their free information pack. Knowing the symptoms and getting medical help quickly really can save lives."
Although anyone of any age can get meningitis and septicaemia, almost half of all cases in the UK are in the under fives. This is why it is particularly important for parents to be vigilant, especially in the winter months when cases increase.
The charity also provides information on meningitis and septicaemia in 18 languages which are available on this website and provides help to those who have already been affected by the diseases.
The Foundation's winter awareness campaign includes radio messages - which can be downloaded from this website - and TV infomercials to encourage listeners and viewers to request free information on meningitis and septicaemia by calling the Foundation's Freefone 24 hour helpline 080 8800 3344 .
