1000 mile mission for meningitis - the vintage tractor trundle comes to an end

25 June 2002

The three vintage tractor enthusiasts who embarked on a cross-country adventure from John O'Groats to Land's End in aid of Meningitis Research Foundation, have completed their challenge. The tractor trundlers - Richard Bowness, Phil Cook and Fred Nixon - reached their final destination on Saturday 22 June.

Said Richard, "We are all exhausted after the 1000 mile journey, but it has been worth every ache and pain along the way. We had a lot of fun, and the public support we have received has been tremendous, it really helped to spur us on. We hope to have raised around £5,000 for Meningitis Research Foundation to help the Charity step closer to its vision of a world free from meningitis and septicaemia."

Meningitis Research Foundation funds vital scientific research into the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia - the blood poisoning form of the disease - raises awareness of the diseases, and offers support through in-depth information and befriending. As the Foundation relies almost entirely on voluntary donations to fund this vital work, the Charity is extremely grateful to the tractor trundlers for their valuable contribution.

What progress is being made?

Since it was founded in 1989, the charity has awarded 122 research grants, leading to many advances in the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia. The total value of the Foundation's investment in vital scientific research is nearly £13.5/€19 million.
