Get up to Speed with Meningitis

29 September 2002

With winter approaching cases of meningitis and septicaemia, the blood poisoning form of the disease, will start to increase. In order to save lives this year Meningitis Research Foundation is urging everyone to 'Get up to Speed with Meningitis'.

Just phone Meningitis Research Foundation's Freefone 24 hour helpline - 080 8800 3344 - for a FREE pack of symptoms information to 'Get up to Speed with Meningitis'. Or log onto the Foundation's updated website for immediately accessible information.

Said Denise Vaughan, Chief Executive of Meningitis Research Foundation, "Too many people still experience the devastation of meningitis and septicaemia. By offering free symptoms information to everyone we hope lives will be saved. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment really do give patients the best chance for a good recovery."

Meningitis and septicaemia are life-threatening diseases, which can strike anyone of any age. Knowing the signs and symptoms of these diseases and acting quickly is therefore essential.

Although there are vaccines, which give excellent protection against meningitis and septicaemia, they cannot prevent all forms of these diseases. It is therefore vital for everyone to 'Get up to Speed with Meningitis.'

What progress is being made?

Since it was founded in 1989, the charity has awarded 122 research grants, leading to many advances in the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia. The total value of the Foundation's investment in vital scientific research is nearly £13.5/€19 million.
