New Foundation patron a great catch

11 November 2002

The much loved Northern Ireland international goalkeeper, Pat Jenning OBE, KSG has become Meningitis Research Foundation's newest patron.

Pat had a long and distinguished career in football, having played for Tottenham Hotspur for 14 years before switching to north London rivals Arsenal for the final eight years of his career in the game.

Pat also made a record 119 appearances for his country, and kept goal for the famed 1982 World Cup team in Spain. Pat, it was said, had the biggest hands in football, which he used to pluck crosses one-handed from the air.

Now reitred from playing, Pat is still involved as a goalkeeping consultant at Spurs and plays golf off an eight handicap.

Having lost his younger brother to the disease many years ago, and vividly remembering the effect it had on his parents and the rest of the family, Pat has agreed to give Meningitis Research Foundation a 'hand' to realise our vision of a world free from meningitis and septicaemia.

What progress is being made?

Since it was founded in 1989, the charity has awarded 122 research grants, leading to many advances in the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia. The total value of the Foundation's investment in vital scientific research is nearly £13.5/€19 million.
