Foundation launches new year campaign

03 January 2003

The Foundation started the new year with a new awareness campaign, "Meningitis: 30 seconds to save lives".

Consisting of 30 seconds messages for TV and Radio presented by charity Patron Dr Hilary Jones, both versions of the message were extensively played by both national and local stations throughout the UK, often accompanied by interviews with members of the Foundation.

The messages stressed the speed with which meningitis and septicaemia, the blood poisoning form of the disease, take hold, the signs and symptoms of the diseases and invited viewers and listeners to call the Freefone 24 hour helpline - 080 8800 3344 - for a free pack of symtpoms information.

As a result the Foundation's helpline has been inundated with requests for further information - information which could save a life.

What progress is being made?

Since it was founded in 1989, the charity has awarded 122 research grants, leading to many advances in the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia. The total value of the Foundation's investment in vital scientific research is nearly £13.5/€19 million.
