Help wanted with research into meningitis

16 January 2003

Calling people living in the following areas: Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire and North and East London. Can you help Meningitis Research Foundation in an important research project?

Have you or your child had pneumococcal meningitis within the last 15 years? Did the illness strike at the age of 15 or less? If yes, we need your help.

The research project aims to find out about the physical, mental and social after effects of pneumococcal meningitis, and assess the impact of these on health, education and employment. It will compare the quality of life in survivors with that of children and young people who have not had this disease.

Pneumococcal meningitis is the second most common form of meningitis in this country. The study will provide evidence of the economic and social burden of this disease which will help to formulate policy on the use of pneumococcal vaccines.
