Tae Kwan Dosh for meningitis

24 May 2003

Meningitis Research Foundation is delighted to have received a cheque for over 1£0,000 from the South West division of the Tae Kwon-Do Association Great Britain (TAGB). Tae kwon-do clubs from Basingstoke to Cornwall took part in a variety of fundraisers throughout the month of February, including an exhausting 24 hour training session, while helping to raise awareness of meningitis and septicaemia - the blood poisoning form of the disease.

The cheque was presented by two members of the TAGB - nine year old Lauren Kerr who contracted meningitis in 1995, and five year old Elliott Dew who contracted meningitis at 20 weeks old in 1997, and is the grandson of Master Dew, who heads the South West division.

Lauren's father and second degree black belt, Kevin Kerr, helped organise the 'Meningitis Month'. Said Kevin, "It has been a lot of fun, and we are all delighted with just how successful the month of fundraising has been."

Said Master Dew, "We presented the cheque at our annual black belt grading ceremony, so I could thank those attending for their hard work over the last month. We hope the money we have raised will help the Foundation step closer towards its vision of a world free from meningitis and septicaemia."

As Meningitis Research Foundation relies almost entirely upon voluntary donations to fund its crucial work, we are extremely grateful to the Tae Kwon-Do Association Great Britain for all their hard work over the last month. The money they have raised will help Meningitis Research Foundation step closer towards its vision of a world free from meningitis and septicaemia by funding vital scientific research into the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia, raising awareness of the diseases and offering support to those affected.

What progress is being made?

Since it was founded in 1989, the charity has awarded 122 research grants, leading to many advances in the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia. The total value of the Foundation's investment in vital scientific research is nearly £13.5/€19 million.
