Trustee's challenge of a lifetime

23 May 2003

David Moed, Trustee of Meningitis Research Foundation, is setting sail for a challenge of a lifetime in aid of the Foundation.

David will be crewing on the ocean going yacht 'MRF Challenge' in a qualifying race for one of the greatest challenges in sailing - the Rolex Fastnet Race. David will be setting sail on 31 May and it can take anything up to 16 hours to complete the 120 nautical miles, depending on weather conditions.

A novice sailor, he has only sailed twice before, David will be tested to the limits. He said: "Although I am approaching the experience with a little trepidation, I am determined to enjoy the challenge which in part is to raise money for Meningitis Research Foundation. In total it is hoped that from the various sponsorship deals and donations some £75,000 will be raised. "

David supports Meningitis Research Foundation as he knows just how devastating meningitis and septicaemia, the blood poisoning form of the disease, can be. His daughter Rosie contracted the diseases when she was just eight months old and for many days was fighting for her life. Thankfully Rosie has made a full recovery.

If you would like to make a donation or sponsor David in his challenge of a lifetime please contact Meningitis Research Foundation's fundraising team on 01454 281814.

What progress is being made?

Since it was founded in 1989, the charity has awarded 122 research grants, leading to many advances in the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia. The total value of the Foundation's investment in vital scientific research is nearly £13.5/€19 million.
