Meningitis - Saving lives this Winter
23 December 2003
Meningitis Research Foundation is aiming to save lives this winter with a Christmas and New Year symptoms reminder to the public.
More cases of meningitis and septicaemia occur in December and January than at any other time of the year, so the timing of the Foundation's messages is crucial. Also, with the flu season upon us, it is important to be able to identify the symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia. Very often these diseases in babies, children and adults, begin with flu-like symptoms.
The Foundation's message focuses on the speed with which meningitis and septicaemia, the blood poisoning form, develop and urges the public to call the Foundation's 24 hour helpline - Freefone 080 8800 3344 (UK), LoCall 1890 41 33 (Republic of Ireland) - for their FREE pack of symptoms information.
Hilary Jones said: "I'm delighted to be working with Meningitis Research Foundation. As a GP and parent, I know just how important it is to know the symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia and to act quickly in order for lives to be saved."
Said Denise Vaughan, Meningitis Research Foundation's Chief Executive: "The Foundation supports many families who have experienced the devastation of meningitis and septicaemia. Through this campaign we hope that lives will be saved as early diagnosis and prompt treatment really do give the best chances for a good recovery."
She continued, "The Foundation is a charity that relies on the public for funds. Please help us to save lives this winter". For information on our fundraising activities and how you can get involved, call the Charity on 01454 281814
