Meningitis - help and support

17 March 2004

It is devastating for everyone when a child's life is affected, or even taken by cruel diseases like meningitis and septicaemia. Although anyone of any age can contract meningitis and septicaemia, it is the under fives that are most at risk.

Meningitis Research Foundation works in your community to help individuals and families whose lives have been touched by meningitis and septicaemia, the blood poisoning form. The Foundation's Freefone 24 hour helpline - 080 8800 3344 - can provide a listening ear, as well as in-depth support and befriending for those affected. Our trained staff and nurses can provide answers to questions someone may have about the diseases and their after effects.

The Foundation's helpline also provides FREE information and literature about the diseases to the general public and health professionals, and additionally we can offer a translation service in 120 languages. Knowing the symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia is vital as early diagnosis offers the best chance of a good recovery.

As Meningitis Research Foundation relies on voluntary donations to operate these vital services, we are extremely grateful to the community for their continued support. If you want to make a donation and help us to continue to offer free information and invaluable support to people in your area, call now on 01454 281814.

What progress is being made?

Since it was founded in 1989, the charity has awarded 122 research grants, leading to many advances in the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia. The total value of the Foundation's investment in vital scientific research is nearly £13.5/€19 million.
