Pneumococcal programme in older people continues

06 April 2004

In August 2003 the Department of Health announced a programme to offer pneumococcal vaccination to the elderly.

This started in August 2003 when the vaccine was made available to all those aged over 80 years. In England and Wales from April 1 2004 the programme has been extended to include all those aged over 75.

People with immune deficiencies and other health conditions that make pneumococcal disease more common or serious should also be offered pneumococcal vaccine.

More information on pneumococcal meningitis and the vaccines available.

What progress is being made?
