Foundation Scoops Silver Award

21 June 2004

National charity Meningitis Research Foundation has been awarded the prestigious Charity Awards' Silver Hallmark for its work in raising awareness of meningitis and septicaemia in the under five year olds.

The Foundation has been awarded the Silver Hallmark in recognition of its awareness work. Last year the charity produced a new leaflet - Meningitis Tot Watch - specifically for parents and other carers of the under fives.

Over a million Tot Watch leaflets were distributed to GP surgeries, nurseries and individuals and was instrumental in saving at least one young life. A mother picked up her copy from her two-year old son's nursery and two days later as he became ill was able to identify the symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia. Through her swift actions her son made a full recovery.

Denise Vaughan, Chief Executive of Meningitis Research Foundation commented: "We are delighted that the work of the Foundation has been received this award. The Charity Awards' Silver Hallmark is recognition of the commitment of the work of the Foundation's staff and members in promoting awareness of meningitis and septicaemia."

Meningitis and septicaemia, the blood poisoning form, are devastating diseases which can kill in hours. There are some 2,500 cases every year in the UK, half of which are in the under fives.

Information on meningitis and septicaemia is available FREE from the Foundation through its 24 hour helpline - Freefone 080 8800 3344 (UK), LoCall 1890 41 33 44 (Republic of Ireland).

What progress is being made?

Since it was founded in 1989, the charity has awarded 122 research grants, leading to many advances in the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia. The total value of the Foundation's investment in vital scientific research is nearly £13.5/€19 million.
