Universities UK provides meningitis guidelines

Universities UK has today launched a revised set of guidelines to help universities deal with cases of meningitis and septicaemia.

Students are still at risk form these life-thretening diseases. Around 2,000 cases of meningococcal disease, meningitis and septicaemia caused by the meningococcal bacteria, are reported each year in England and Wales and the second highest risk group occurs at age 15-19 years, corresponding with the age at which most students start further or higher education.

While many institutions already have systems in place to deal with the disease, these guidelines, endorsed by Meningitis Research Foundation, give an aid to institutions when they formulate or update their own polices to reflect local circumstances.

What progress is being made?

Since it was founded in 1989, the charity has awarded 122 research grants, leading to many advances in the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia. The total value of the Foundation's investment in vital scientific research is nearly £13.5/€19 million.
