Meningitis: messages that could save a life this winter
28 December 2004
With cases of meningitis and septicaemia often reaching a peak over the holiday season, Meningitis Research Foundation is aiming to save lives this winter with 30 and 10-second messages being broadcast on national TV and radio throughout Christmas and the new year.
Meningitis and septicaemia - the blood poisoning form of the disease - can affect anyone of any age, but babies, children and young adults are most at risk. They are diseases that can kill in hours, so early diagnosis and prompt, effective treatment provide the best chance for a good recovery.
Foundation patron Dr Hilary Jones, who presents the messages, said: "Not all forms of meningitis and septicaemia are preventable by vaccines. And with more than one in ten people who get the diseases dying and many more left with a range of disabilities and after effects that dramatically alter their lives, it is vital that everyone knows the symptoms and how important it is to act quickly in order for lives to be saved."
The messages, therefore, urge the public to be safe rather than sorry this winter by calling the Foundation's Freefone 24 hour helpline - 080 8800 3344 - for their FREE pack of Race Against Time symptoms information.
