New Trustee for Foundation

07 January 2005

A warm welcome to Margaret O' Brien who joined the charity's Board of Trustees last September.

Margaret is assistant director of nursing at St Ita's Hospital in Dublin. She has worked with the Foundation over a number of years, having become a founder member of the charity in Ireland following the death of her 17 year old daughter, Orla, from meningitis in January 1995.

Particularly active in a fundraising capacity, Margaret has run the highly successful golf classic for the last three years and has been instrumental in gathering so many Foundation runners for the annual Dublin mini marathon.

With her wealth of experience, both professional and personal, Margaret is a welcome addition to the Board.

What progress is being made?

Since it was founded in 1989, the charity has awarded 122 research grants, leading to many advances in the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia. The total value of the Foundation's investment in vital scientific research is nearly £13.5/€19 million.
