Meningitis: Saving lives this winter

28 November 2005

Meningitis Research Foundation is aiming to save lives this winter by ensuring people are well informed about the symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia through its Freefone 24 hour helpline - 080 8800 3344.

Anyone of any age can contract meningitis and septicaemia but babies, children and young adults are most at risk. Although there are vaccines which protect against some forms of these diseases, many others are not vaccine preventable.

Denise Vaughan, Meningitis Research Foundation's Chief Executive, said: "Cases of meningitis and septicaemia increase in December and January and as these diseases can kill in hours it's vital that people know the symptoms. Using our helpline could save lives."

What progress is being made?

Since it was founded in 1989, the charity has awarded 122 research grants, leading to many advances in the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia. The total value of the Foundation's investment in vital scientific research is nearly £13.5/€19 million.
