Response from Secretary of State for Health - Jeremy Hunt

16 July 2013

In June this year members from Northern Ireland and Cumbria who have lost loved ones to meningitis visited No.10 Downing Street to hand in a petition calling on the UK Government to introduce a new Meningitis B vaccine.

Today we had the following letter from the Secretary of State for Health , Jeremy Hunt:

“I was very sorry to read of the tragic loss of Terri and Daniel due to the Meningitis B (Men B) disease and I note the concerns of the petition’s signatories about the availability of the Bexsero vaccine.

As you are already aware, the possibility of Men B immunisations using the Bexsero vaccine is being considered by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI). The JCVI is the independent expert body that advises the Governement on immunisation.

The committee is anticipated to complete its consideration during summer this year and will provide advice to the Government following careful consideration. Once received, we will consider the JCVI’s advice carefully and then make a formal announcement.

I hope this reply is helpful.”

Yours sincerely,

Jeremy Hunt.

We wait with anticipation of the outcome of the JCVI.
