O’Donnells announce support for Meningitis Research Foundation

10 November 2015

O’Donnells, Ireland’s number one, hand cooked and gluten free crisps are proud to announce their support for Meningitis Research Foundation.

Meningitis is a deadly disease that can strike without warning and is easily mistaken for a milder illness. The risk heightens as winter approaches when people’s immune systems are weakened.

Meningitis Research Foundation is a charity that not only promotes awareness of meningitis but also helps families affected and funds research to prevent death and disability.

O’Donnells are supporting Meningitis Research Foundation this year with a donation and creating awareness by featuring Meningitis Research Foundation’s logo and details on the new seasonal branded packs of O’Donnells crisps. Speaking about Meningitis Research Foundation Ed O’Donnell says “It’s the combination of their services and my own personal experience that make this charity close to my heart”.

Ed O’Donnell contracted bacterial meningitis as a child, and although he recovered well he suffered permanent hearing loss as a result of contracting the disease. He has total hearing loss in one ear and partial loss in the other ear. Ed is one of the lucky ones, as many as one in ten of those people affected will die and one in three survivors will be left with life altering after-effects. Meningitis kills more children in Ireland than any other infectious disease.

Meningitis Research Foundation is warning people to be aware of the signs and symptoms as the diseases can strike anyone at any age and vaccines don’t cover all forms. Anyone who is concerned about the symptoms should contact their Freefone helpline on 1800 41 33 44. Donations can be made online but people can also donate €2 from their mobile phone by texting MENB to 50300.
