This unique trip includes trekking and camping in the orangutans’
rainforest home, tracking wildlife, meeting local people, tubing down
the Bohorok river, swimming in hot springs, and a highlight visit to the
Gunung Leuser National Park’s orangutan feeding platform where you will
be able to see these beautiful creatures swing through the trees.
The Sumatran Orangutan Society (SOS) is dedicated to the
conservation of Sumatran orangutans and their forest home. Their UK and
international branches raise awareness of the threats facing wild
orangutans, and raise funds to support grassroots conservation projects
in Sumatra. Together with a team of committed Indonesian
conservationists, SOS works with local communities living alongside the
last remaining orangutan habitat. They plant trees to restore damaged
ecosystems, and provide training to help the local people work towards a
more sustainable future for their forests.
Your challenge takes place in the Gunung Leuser National Park, one
of the only places in the world where you can still see the Sumatran
orangutan in the wild. They share these forests with a whole host of
other wildlife; gibbons, elephants, hornbills, Thomas leaf monkeys,
macaques, sunbears and the elusive Sumatran tiger are just a handful of
the thousands of animal and plant species found in this unique World
Heritage ecosystem. The park takes its name from the 3,404m Mount
Leuser.
Throughout your trek you will learn to spot an astounding array of
plants and wildlife and hone many rainforest skills. Sumatra’s forests
are a last refuge for many of the world’s most endangered species. This
trek is designed to make you feel at home in their world
