Great Ireland Run

A run in the Park

It's the big day with the bigger atmosphere, both on and off the course. The Phoenix Park in Dublin will be hosting excited adults and children from near and far for the SPAR Great Ireland Run, now in its eleventh year.

The only event in Ireland recognised by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), the 10k road race is a highlight in Dublin’s sporting calendar.

With elite times and reputations increasing every year, 2013 looks set to be no different when Ireland’s very own woman of the moment, Fionnuala Britton strides out to continue he rise in the sport.

Together with a collection of the world's finest athletes will be thousands of runners of all abilities and enthusiastic children raring to go. Olympic athletes are sure to be an inspiring presence, but it's always the younger ones’ that really add to the fun of the weekend.

Familiar faces from television and film will be there to leave some starry eyed whilst others get autographs and pose for pictures.

Last year saw Ireland's most successful female athlete as the honorary starter for the Junior Run, Sonia O’Sullivan standing alongside Catherine McKiernan, the Irish marathon record holder, to fire off the 9-15 year old category.

It will be the second time the 3-8 year old Mini 1.6k will take place in Ireland, and the pace is always fast from the off. The sight of little ones dragging their parents along the leafy course, to come home in first place, is a guaranteed winner for everyone involved.

By becoming part of our team you will be helping to bring a world free from meningitis and septicaemia a step closer.

Meningitis and septicaemia are devastating diseases which can kill or disable in hours. Although anyone of any age can get the diseases, babies, children and young adults are most at risk.

Your contribution will enable us to fund research into the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia, provide life-saving awareness information and support people who have lost a loved one, like Gina, or are coping with after effects.
