Long-term outcome in adult survivors of bacterial meningitis and the impact of steroid treatment.

A recent study has shown that the use of a steroid, dexamethasone, is beneficial in the treatment of children & adults with bacterial meningitis and reduces mortality by 8 per cent. This further study aims to find out whether dexamethasone is also beneficial in reducing neuropsychological damage. It will involve a follow-up evaluation of patients treated with and without dexamethasone. Patients will undergo psychological and neurological examinations in order to determine the presence of neuropsychological impairment. The researchers hypothesise that patients treated with dexamethasone will show less neuropsychological impairment than those treated with a placebo.
