Hi
So it's been some weeks since I've written. I'm sorry. I'm telling you I was busy - maybe that's not a good enough of an excuse? :D Well it's 2 days before the race and I'm feeling good so I give you a brief ( I promise) rundown of the last few weeks.
Week of 24th August - Some friends from Londons surprised me with a weekend visit for my birthday! Good friends, but much to their surprise and slight disgust (teasing), it did not prevent us from running a long run Saturday morning of 8 miles!! lol It was a great run and a milestone for me. It was at the time the farthest I have ever run!! I say this with conviction although I really only have a vague, rather sketchily-measured memory of running 7 miles along White Bear Lake, MN, USA about 5 years ago. LOL. So anyway, I felt some success there.
Week of the 31th Aug - Well this week was a true test of my commitment to the run. My running buddy took himself on holiday this week and so I had to motivate myself - mind and body - to keep up the training. I thought it was going to be a difficult challenge because I had grown accustomed to sharing the runs with someone, especially the highs and lows immediately after the run, which I thought I really needed to do. Share. Now who was I going to force to look at the progress of my right foot pinky toe blister?! No one. Well as it turned out it was great! I mean I did feel at times a bit scared of certain parts of my run, you know Edinburgh's soo dodgy ;)! However, actually the overriding feeling about running alone was a nice peace of mind and pace, I could totally run at my own pace, no worries about slowing any one up at all! 9 miless!!!
And so I think I was finally able to give a seal of commitment to the Great North Run that I had been lacking. I am commited now because I ran alone. I mean it really became more real to me because it was completely my choice to get myself out of bed on a Sunday, run in the morning and in the rain. Do you know what I mean? Apparently my running buddy had been pulling some weight in this ride and I owe him a lot of credit and appreciation for that. I was really proud of myself and shocked my running buddy too! (Cutting it close in terms of commitment - don't you think?!)
Week of the 7th Sept: Good week of training. Felt really good and we had our last long run. 10 whole miles!!! I mean that's 100 minutes of running - 1hr40min. Wild! Post run treat - a box of Cadbury cones - Hey I shared with someone else! ;)
Week of 21 Sept: LAST Week of training. We had our last run (2 miles) on Thursday. This week was Hilareously difficult. All the muscle tone and lung capacity is there, so probably just nerves. I bought a box of Fruit and Fibre just in case. :)
I am really excited - so wish me luck!!!!
I will report with the official race time and event description next week! Thanks for reading!!!
